Additional documents for a file in progress when the department asks for them, an administrative appeal (recours gracieux) against a prefectoral decision, a letter to the associations office, a notice of a public demonstration. Always quote your file reference and contact details.
Before you send
Identity cards, passports, driving licences, vehicle registration certificates and most residence permits are applied for online (ANTS, ANEF): a fax does not replace these online procedures. Check on the official record that the department accepts faxes, and keep proof of sending if a deadline is running.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send an administrative appeal to the prefecture by fax?
Yes: a recours gracieux is a letter addressed to the author of the decision, with no required form. To prove the date you sent it, request the transmission receipt; if a lot is at stake, also send it by registered post.
Can I apply for a residence permit by fax?
No. Most residence permits are applied for on the ANEF website (the digital administration for foreign nationals in France), and identity documents, driving licences and vehicle registrations on the ANTS website. A fax is only for sending a document if the department asks you to use that channel.
Does the sub-prefecture have the same fax number?
No, each sub-prefecture has its own number. They are listed in the Sub-prefecture category of the directory and on each department page.
