Numbers and routing

Non-geographic number

A non-geographic number is a landline number tied to no region; in France, it starts with 09 and often comes with a broadband router.

It appeared with internet telephony, which made local anchoring pointless: the line follows the subscription, not the exchange. It is called and billed like an ordinary landline. Depending on the operator and the plan, the same subscriber may also be offered a geographic number.

Why it matters for fax

A 09 number may reach a fax machine plugged into a router, with the uncertainties of voice over IP. It may also be a virtual fax number that ends at a server. Either way, it is dialled and routed like any landline number.
