Voice over IP
Voice over IP splits speech into data packets carried by a computer network, instead of reserving a continuous circuit from end to end.
The gain is economic: one link carries voice, data and everything else. The price is compression designed for speech, which discards what the ear does not perceive. That reasoning is right for a conversation and wrong for a modem, whose entire information lies in the exact shape of the signal.
