Numbers and routing

Arcep

Arcep is the independent administrative authority that regulates electronic communications, postal services and press distribution in France.

Its full name is the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Postal Services and Print Media Distribution. It allocates numbers and frequencies, sets the rules for access to operators' networks, oversees the copper network shutdown and publishes coverage data. It succeeded the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in 2005.

Why it matters for fax

Arcep set the framework for the copper network shutdown, and therefore for the end of the analogue lines fax machines depend on. The numbering plan it manages also determines which numbers can be fax numbers.
