Electronic registered letter

Acronym: LRE

The French electronic registered letter (LRE) is the digital equivalent of registered post, with the same legal effect when it meets the legal requirements.

The French Post and Electronic Communications Code treats it as equivalent to a paper registered letter, provided it meets the eIDAS requirements for a qualified electronic registered delivery service. The provider verifies the identity of sender and recipient, proves the dates of sending and receipt, and guarantees the integrity of the content.

Why it matters for fax

A fax is not a registered letter, paper or electronic. When a contract or the law requires a registered letter, that is what must be sent; a fax can accompany it to give notice sooner, but does not replace it.
