Proof, compliance and data

eIDAS

eIDAS is the European regulation on electronic identification and trust services: electronic signatures, seals, timestamps and registered delivery.

Adopted in 2014 and applicable since 2016, Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 makes these services recognised throughout the Union. It defines assurance levels and reserves the strongest presumptions for qualified services, provided by supervised providers listed on trusted lists. A revision adopted in 2024 adds the European Digital Identity Wallet.

Why it matters for fax

eIDAS provides the tools that ended fax's monopoly on transmissions that 'count': qualified electronic registered delivery, qualified timestamps and qualified signatures. Understanding this framework helps you know when a fax is enough and when something else is needed.
