In short

A cancellation by fax is valid when the contract provides for it or the company accepts it. French law does not list it among the guaranteed methods: for insurance, those are a letter, a statement at the head office or agent, a bailiff's writ, the channel used to take out the contract, and online cancellation. Check your terms and conditions before sending, and keep the PDF acknowledgment of receipt: it dates your request.

How to fill it in

    Find your references

    Contract number, customer number, address of the cancellations department: they appear on your policy schedule, an invoice or a renewal notice. Note the renewal date if you are cancelling on that basis.

    Fill in the template

    Enter your details, the organisation's details and the type of contract. The reason is optional: give it if the cancellation relies on a specific right (annual renewal, moving house, cancellation after one year).

    Check the preview and sign

    The preview shows the letter exactly as it will be sent. Add an image of your signature, or download the PDF to print and sign it by hand.

    Send it by fax

    "Send this document by fax" passes the PDF to the sending form, with the recipient's number already filled in. Add the PDF acknowledgment of receipt to keep dated proof of the transmission.

Check before sending

  • A fax is not always an accepted way to cancel

    For insurance, French law guarantees a letter, a statement at the head office or agent, a bailiff's writ, the communication channel used to take out the contract, and online cancellation. A fax is not on that list: it only counts if the contract provides for it or the insurer accepts it. If in doubt, back it up with a letter.

  • Tenant's home insurance: go through the new insurer

    When a tenant changes insurer, it is normally the new insurer that sends the cancellation request to the old one, so the home is never left uninsured. Ask them before sending the letter yourself.

  • A lease cannot be ended by fax

    A tenant's notice to quit must be given by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, by bailiff's writ, or by hand delivery against signature. A fax, like an email, is not enough.

  • Contract taken out online: three-click cancellation

    A contract that can be concluded online (phone, internet, energy, insurance, gym…) must be cancellable online in a few clicks. That is often the simplest route; the fax remains useful as an additional record.
