Fax server

A fax server is software or a device that centralises sending and receiving faxes for an organisation, from users' workstations.

It connects to the organisation's lines or SIP trunk and replaces the fleet of fax machines. Users send from their email or a business application, and incoming faxes are distributed to each person, often through a direct number per department or per person. The server keeps a full log of transmissions.

Why it matters for fax

This is the form fax takes in large organisations, hospitals, public bodies, law firms: infrastructure rather than a machine. It keeps the same line constraints as the fax machine, but adds traceability, archiving and access control.
