Fax explained

Sending a fax to several recipients: one send per number

The fax protocol has no concept of a copied or blind-copied recipient. Every number is dialled on its own: a document addressed to five recipients is five separate transmissions.

Short answer

A fax has no copy field. Reaching several recipients means repeating the send number by number: each call negotiates its own connection, produces its own report and can fail on its own. On this site the form accepts one ten-digit French number at a time, and the published quota is two faxes a day, in force since 7 February 2012.

How to proceed

  1. 1

Prepare one cover sheet per recipient

The document stays the same; only the cover sheet changes, and it names the recipient concerned and no one else. Never list the others on it, or each of them learns who else received the paper.

  2. 2

    Send number by number

Fill the form again for each recipient: recipient name, sender name, subject, sender e-mail address, fax number. The file is a PDF of 10 MB at most, and the number a ten-digit French number beginning with 01 to 05 or 09.

  3. 3

    Check each report separately

One successful send says nothing about the others. Record the time and the outcome for every number: a single recipient may have received nothing, and no other report will mention it.

A broadcast list moves the risk, it does not remove it

Bulk-sending offers automate the repetition, not the reliability, and two effects remain. First, building a file of numbers tied to identified individuals is processing of personal data, with the obligations that come with it. Second, a row shifted by one in that file does not go wrong once: it pairs every document with the neighbouring recipient, as many times as there are rows, and each mistake prints out in someone's office.

Frequently asked questions

Can several numbers be entered in the form?
No. The field accepts a single ten-digit French number beginning with 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 or 09. A second recipient means starting the send over from the beginning.
How many recipients can be reached in a day?
The service publishes a limit of two faxes a day, in force since 7 February 2012, so two recipients. Beyond that, the request goes through the contact form.
Does fax have a blind copy?
No, which is why discretion rests entirely on the cover sheet. Nothing in the transmission tells a recipient that they are not the only one, unless you write it there yourself.
